China facts & history in brief
My China pages directory
Map of China
China is one the major country of
eastern and central Asia and includes Tibet.
Bounded by Mongolia, Russia, East China,
South China, and the Yellow Sea,
North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar
(Burma), Bhutan, Nepal, India,
Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Kazakhstan.
The third-largest country in the world.
Well developed major super power.
The official language is Mandarin.
Written history goes back
over 5000 years.
Some of the major points of interest are the culture,
The Great Wall of China and the Peking Man's Caves.
The Chinese used printing, gun powder, compass,
porcelain, paper, silkworm farming and silk
manufacturing before they were invented or
used in Europe.
Capital is Beijing.
China, big, beautiful China.
Could spend years there, still
wouldn't see half of it.
Hui Chin, Endre and I visited China in
1997 and it was a real cultural shock for us.
Truck loads of history, some five
thousand years in fact, give or take
a few hundred years.
We've enjoyed our stay very much.
Zhoukoudian - 'Peking Man' Caves
Peking Man caves, Zhoukoudian,
the site of the primeval Chinese, is 48
km south-west of Beijing and there is also
a fossil exhibition hall.
On display are models, stone tools, and
the skeletons of prehistoric creatures.
Early this century, villagers around
Zhoukoudian found fossils in a local
quarry and took them to the local
medicine shop for sale as 'dragon bones'.
Very soon archaeologists - foreign and
Chinese - poured in for a dig.
Many years later, a molar than a
complete skullcap, Sinanthropus
Pekinensis was found in 1929.
The cap was said to be half a million
years old, it was never
established scientifically.
It was packed away with other dig
results during the Japanese invasion
in 1937 and the whole lot disappeared for ever.
Many other fragments were found
since but nothing really comparable.
Zhoukoudian is a very interesting place.
Is that where we all came from???
