Map of China

Beijing
Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beijing is the capital and second largest city of China, after Shanghai.
Used to be known as Peking.
Beijing is famous for its beautiful palaces, temples, and huge stone walls and gates.
Its art treasures and universities have long made the city China's cultural centre.
Beijing is on a plain in northern China, about 160 kilometres inland.
Beijing's factories, many communists built, produce chemicals, electronic equipment, farm machinery, iron and steel, textiles, porcelain, tapestries, and tiles.
Beijing was founded about 2000 B.C. as a trading centre and the capital of the small state of Yen, which existed from about 400 to 200 B.C.
Kublai Khan's Mongols conquered China in the late 1200's and set up the Yuan dynasty and made Beijing his winter capital.
The Ming emperors shifted their capital to Nanjing in 1368, than moved it back to Beijing in the early 1400's.
They called the city Beiping, (Northern peace), than changed it to Beijing (Northern capital).
In 1949, (October 1), Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China, renamed the city Beijing and made it China's capital.

Population about 6 million.

Hui Chin, Endre, my son and I visited Beijing in 1997 and it was everything we expected and a lot more.

Wide boulevards and very narrow alleys, new multistory buildings nestled beside old, ancient buildings.

Beijing is huge and filled with history, contrast, culture and of course with millions of nice chinese people.

Hui Chin and I visited China and Beijing during 2007 again.
Beijing 'grown up' since our last visit and anxiously waiting and readying itself for the Olympics.
There's hurried, demolishing, building, cosmetics, cleaning and painting going on all around.
A clock on Tian'anmen Square, that was counting down Hong Kong's return during our last visit, now very busy counting down to the Olympics.
The government and Beijing's civic leaders are anxious to show-case Beijing, China, Chinese people, their Culture, their History to the whole world during the Games.

We had a terrific time to check out that everything will be ready in time.
