Italy is a republic in southern Europe, bordered by Switzerland, Austria; Slovenia, the Adriatic Sea; the Mediterranean Sea; the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Ligurian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and France. Sardinia, Sicily and Elba islands also part of Italy as well many smaller islands. San Marino and Vatican City are the independent countries within mainland Italy. About half of Italy is on the Italian Peninsula, which shaped like a boot. From the Alps to southern tip in the Mediterranean Sea the whether and vegetation is very varied. Rome is the capital of Italy. Poor in agricultural and natural resources except mainly natural gas, petroleum, many types of building stone, like marble, and its long coastline is reach in fish. The population is about 57 million and the country is divided into 20 regions and than subdivided into provinces and communes mainly Roman Catholic. Official language is Italian. Since Roman times Italy has a dominant role in world culture. Some of the world's best sculpture, architecture, painting, literature, opera have Italian origin. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Puccini, and Verdi to mention a few and not to forget the Mafia.
