The Italian mainland trains get cut into 4-6 section and the sections get shunted back and forth onto the ferry, before this big boats can cross the ditch to Sicily or vice versa. The trains have to reassembled on the other side of the ditch, taking about 2 - 2 and half hours altogether on a good day, I suppose, there could be delays.
