Jordan
Jordan facts & history in
brief
Yerash
is an old Roman city.
It was buried under sand for centuries
until it was rediscovered in
the early 19th century.
It wasn't until the late 1920
that excavations started.
The site have been occupied since Neolithic
times, but most of it was built by
soldiers of Alexander the Great.
During Roman times the town
was rebuilt and prospered.
Jesus may have passed through
the town on the way to Jerusalem.
The Mongols, Persians, Arabs, Crusaders
and Turks fought over the city
and was abandoned.
There's an very large Forum, a
Temple of Zeus, Nymphaeum,
Temple of Artemis, the triple arched
gateway (Was built to Hadrian's
visit to the city), etc.
