Jordan
Jordan facts & history in
brief
Madaba,
the city of mosaics, goes
back to the bronze age, around 2000
B.C.
The Bible refers to it as Medeba
of the Moabites.
In the 9th century B.C. the Hebrews
lost it to Mesha.
In 323 B.C. Alexander the Great's
generals held, until Roman times,
when Byzantine taken it over.
In 614 the Persians destroyed the
town, later damaged by earthquake
the town was abandoned, until the
19th century when some Christians
settled here and found some of the
mosaics.
The best example is in the Greek
Orthodox Church depicting Palestine
and Jerusalem.
