Jordan facts & history in
brief
Amman
is the capital and largest city
of Jordan and built on several hills, on old
trade routes and still is a major trading centre.
The main streets run between the hills.
Amman has many note worthy buildings,
churches, and mosques.
Amman was settled about 1000 B.C.,and was called
Rabbathammon, the capital of the Ammonites.
The Bible describes how David
and Joab, of the Israelites captured it.
Greeks, Romans, Arab Muslims, and
Turks controlled the city in later
years.
In 1921, Amman became the capital of a new
state of Transjordan and changed to Jordan in 1949.
Population around 1 million.
