Slovakia facts and history in brief
Zvolen (Zólyom in Hungarian) is a the largest
town of central Pohronie, with the population of about
50,000.
Due to Zvolen geographical position in Slovakia the
city is an important transport centre for road, railway
and air services.
The city's history goes back to primeval times.
The oldest written reference to Zolyom is dated in 1243,
when King Béla IV, granted the city royal privileges.
The city assumed major importance when a royal castle
was built in the vicinity in the late 14th C.
In later centuries trade and the crafts flourished in
the township and the town was fortified with a wall
around it.
Today's Zvolen is a prosperous city with wood processing
plants, university and scientific institutions.
There are many attractions to see and do in or around
town.
The huge and highly visible, papier-mâché
looking castle overlooking the city, draws your attention
to the detriment to everything else around town.
