Slovakia is a central European republic,
formerly part of Czechoslovakia.
Occupies an area of 49,035 sq km and is
bounded by Poland, Ukraine, Hungary,
Austria and the Czech Republic and
dominated by the Carpathian mountains,
with the the Gerlach Shield at a height
of 2,655 m.
Two-fifths of the land
is covered in forest.
Motor vehicles, glass, armaments, footwear, and textiles are the main
exports and the main mineral resources include iron ore, copper, magnesia,
lead, zinc, and lignite.
Formerly belonging to the Hungarian crown for over a thousand years.
Slovakia came into being after the, - to the Hungarians
unfavourable - Trianon Peace Agreement, after WWI and
formed a union with the Czech lands until 1938, when
it gained nominal independence under German protection.
From 1948 Czechoslovakia was under communist regime.
In 1993, an independent Slovakia was declared.
Tensions remain between the Slovak majority and the ethnic
Hungarian minority population.
The population is just under 6 million.
