facts and history in brief
Viglas (Végles in Hungarian) is a small
settlement on the road from Lucenec to Zvolen, - well
for us anyway, - because we were travelling that way.
Seriously now. Viglas has a nice
castle on top of the hill.
A hunting castle was built in the 14th C. for the king.
In the 16th C. the castle was
fortified and became very important
as part of the chain of fortifications
against the Turkish invasion.
After 1960 the Eszterházy family acquired it and turned it into
a luxurious residence.
The castle burned
down in 1945.
I, speaking for myself of course, enjoyed
playing with trains at the village at
the foot of the castle hill, much more
than looking at the ruins.
There seemed to be an abundant supply of ruined or not so ruined castles,
or fortifications in Slovakia.
