Occupies an area of 49,035 sq km and is bounded by Poland, Ukraine,
Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic and dominated by the Carpathian
mountains, with the the Gerlach Shield at a height of 2,655 m.

The Gabcikovo Dam was built between 1980 and 1990 mainly to supply
power for the district and control the Danube, which regularly used
to flood the district.
Beside the Gabcikovo Hydro Electric Power Station are two locks for
ships to pass through.
