Slovakia a central European republic, formerly
part of Czechoslovakia.
Occupies an area of 49,035 sq km and is bounded by Poland,
Ukraine, Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic and
dominated by the Carpathian mountains, with the the
Gerlach Shield at a height of 2,655 m.

Slovakia facts and history in brief
Filakovo is famous for its ruined fortress, which
dates back to 1246.
The Turks conquered the Fortress in 1554 and occupied
it for forty years and used it as an administration
centre for the district.
In 1682 the castle was conquered and destroyed by Thököly's
army.
