Slovakia a central European republic, formerly
part of Czechoslovakia.
Occupies an area of 49,035 sq km and is bounded
by Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Austria and
the Czech Republic and dominated
by the Carpathian mountains,
with the the Gerlach Shield at a height
of 2,655 m.

Slovakia facts and history in brief
Banská Stiavnica (Selmecbánya)
is one of the Slovakia's town included in the List
of World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO in 1996,
with the population of about 12,000.
Documents refering to the mining of gold,
silver and other precious metals in the environs of
Banská Stiavnica in 1156.
In 1735, the Kingdom of Hungary's oldest
mining school was established in the city.
The town's high cultural and historical heritage
represented in over 360 fine churches, buildings
and other structures.
Hui Chin and I spent numerous hours exploring the
town and the mining museum, not far from the city.
