Banská Bystrica (Beszterce Bánya) with its well preserved mediaeval city centre is lies beside the Hron river. A very prosperous mining town. Gold, silver and many other metals and ores were extracted from the nearby hills.
The enourmous square is a 'pedestrinas only mall', if you driving and booking a hotel at the Tourist Info at the top of the Mall, and your hotel is at the bottom end of the roughly 2 km long Mall, you might have to drive around town more than 10 km to get to your hotel. Do not forget, we were strangers as well. When we asked for directions, a nice man said, he will hop in our car and shows us the way.
