Ayutthaya (Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya) or
Ayuthia, the former capital of Siam
(now Thailand), a market and tourist
town and the capital of Ayutthaya
province in south-central Thailand,
on the Chao Phraya River, noted for
its early Siamese royal palace,
temples, and pagodas.
An ancient Khmer settlement, served
as capital of Siam from 1350.
In 1559 it was destroyed by the
Burmese and rebuilt by the Siamese
and later destroyed again by the
Burmese in 1767 when the
capital was moved to Bangkok.
Population about 70 thousand.
