Singapore facts & history
in brief
I visited Singapore in 1978 for the
first time on our way to and from Europe with
my daughter Sarolta.
Singapore was a very different place in
those days in retrospect and
a real tourist attraction.
Since those days Singapore under
went radical changes developing
as a dynamic business centre in
South-east Asia.
My wife Hui Chin came from Singapore and
my relation with the city
changed, understandably.
Most of the times travel from or
coming back to New Zealand involves
a stopover or two in Singapore,
especially to Europe and most parts
of Asia.
Singapore is a beautiful, rapidly
developing place.
I've witnessed it's development
over the years.
Sure is a hot place.
Hui Chin, Endre and I were invited and our fare
paid to visit our Singapore relations, but mainly
to celebrate Hui Chin father's 80th birthday.
We spent Christmas, New Year's Day and a few
other weeks getting to know my Singapore relations and
the exciting city-nation.
Together we revisited the Tang Village, Santoza Island,
the Bird Sanctuary, the Crocodile Paradise, the Chinese and
the Japanese Gardens and many
other Singapore attractions.
The highlight of the visit was of course my
father-in laws' birthday celebrations.
Other very interesting and memorable
experiences were, being driven to
the Singapore Catholic Cathedral
for a Christmas Midnight Mass and
before and after the Mass driving
along Orchard Road and witnessing
the festivities there in a chauffeur
driven limousine.
The very crowded Mass and the Orchard
Road festivities were very spectacular
and unforgettable.
