Alaska, U.S.A.
U.S.A. facts & history in brief
U.S.A. Map
Anchorage is the largest city,
the commercial, financial,
military, transportation
centre of Alaska.
It is also the administrative
centre of the state's rail,
air fishing, gold-mining, oil
industries and chief port of
Alaska is on Cook Inlet in
south central Alaska.
The city was badly damaged
during an earthquake in 1964.
In 1778, Captain James Cook
sailed into Cook Inlet.
Anchorage was founded in 1914 as
headquarters and work camp for the
Alaska Railroad and land was sold
at a bargain price at the
'Great Anchorage Lot Sale'.
Major development and growth
were due to increased farming,
WWII military bases and the discovery
of oil in 1957 at Prudhoe Bay.
The oil revenue stimulated the
development of the Downtown with
the construction of the Sullivan
Sports Arena, the Egan Civic
Centre and the Alaska Centre
for the Performing Arts.
The Anchorage Museum of History
and Arts was expanded, and 196km
(122miles) of bicycle trails were paved.
There is some animosity between
the people of Anchorage, Fairbanks
and the State's Capital, Juneau.
In Anchorage and most of Alaska
the whether can be unpredictable,
with rain, snow and many overcast days.
Long days in summer and long-loooong
nights during winter.
Some of the events and attraction
are the Sled Dog Races, the Summer
Solstice Festival, the Alaska State
Fair, the nearby Chugach State
Park for hiking and skiing.
Earthquake Park near 4th Ave where
the 1964 earthquake moved the city's
west side to slip more than half
kilometre seaward, demolishing 75
homes and killing three.
A major interesting stop is Anchorage
Museum of History and Art.
Another interesting place is the
Elmendorf AFB Wildlife Museum with
its large collection of Alaskan
animals and history.
Also the Imaginarium with its
many hand-on experiments worth a look.
To view the fine Native Alaskan
artwork nothing better than
the Heritage Library Museum.
Delaney Park is where you can
see real life grizzly bears.
The Westchester Lagoon Sanctuary
is a nice, peaceful place for a stroll.
Alaska and Anchorage is world
famous for its scenic beauty
and many outdoor activities,
like hiking, skiing, rock climbing,
hunting, boating or just cruising
around exploring the natural beauty
of the land and wild life, such as
the salmon swimming
upstream by the thousands.
Population: about 300,000.
Hui Chin and I loved Anchorage and
our stay at the Inlet Tower Hotel.
The whether wasn't our best
friend, however we thoroughly
enjoyed our hiking and boat
trips as well as our trips
to Kotzebu and Nome.
Terrific scenery, terrific wildlife
and very friendly people.
