Mexico
Mexico facts & history in
brief
Tijuana is a rapidly growing city in Mexican California
(Baja California state), at the United States,
border about 20 kilometres south of San Diego.
Tijuana's name may came from the large
ranch called the Tia Juana (Aunt Jane) or
from the Indian name for the region.
Tijuana was a small village in the early
1900's, now a bustling big city with
attractive public buildings and luxury
hotels, gift shops, fine restaurants,
nightclubs, bullfights, and horse races.
The once seedy, sin city just
south of the border, now attracts thousands
of tourists from the United
States to spend millions of dollars at
Tijuana's duty/tax free shops.
Population around 1 million.
In 1996 while I was in San Diego I went
over to Tijuana for a few days.
Only a border post away, but the two
very different and
contrasting countries.
It was a real eye opener and a
memorable experience.
