South Island
New Zealand facts & history in brief
New Zealand Map
Westport
is the service and commercial
town and port for coalmining,
saw-milling and farming of the
surrounding Buller region,
with a population of about 5000
people, by the mouth
of the Buller River.
John Rochfort, a surveyor
discovered coal and gold
in the area in 1859.
Westport was proclaimed
a borough in 1873.
Whoever named Westport in the first
place, must have had my sense of
humour, he had his head screwed
on the right way, had his feet firmly
on the ground and his priorities
really sorted out.
Westport used to be a very busy,
prosperous place, on the west coast
of the South Island, with a very
important, busy port facility.
