Capital city of New Zealand
New Zealand facts & history in brief
New Zealand Map
Wellington
is the capital of New Zealand,
at the southern tip of the North Island,
the second largest urban area with
the population of nearly 400,000 people,
with the Hutt Valley and the Porirua Basin.
In 1839 Colonel William Wakefield
chose Petone as the site for Wellington
city but it was moved after a few
days following flooding of the Hutt River.
Wellington Harbour, almost
land-locked with a narrow entrance
is one of the finest deep-water
harbours in the world.
Due to its central location, Wellington
is a impotant domestic land, sea and
air transport centre.
The central position was the major
factor for the government's move
from Auckland to Wellington in 1865.
There was some population decline
during the 1970's and the lack of
accessible resources and serviceable
area it would still decline further
if an urgent building programme have
not been prompted by the high earthquake
risk and the condemning
of the older buildings.
The city and its surrounding hills
at the edge of Cook Strait act as a
wind funnel for the westerlies,
making it one of the windiest
cities anywhere in the world.
The name of the city and province
honours the first Duke of Wellington
a supporter of the New Zealand Company.
The Ngai Tara and the Rangitane
Maoris were the main inhabitants,
but many other tribal groups,
mainly from the Taranaki district
were also present when European
settlement started in the 1840's.
It was declared a borough
in 1842 and a city in 1903.
