Timaru
is a service town and commercial
centre for the surrounding sheep,
mixed-farming, and wheat-growing
area of South Canterbury with the
population of about 30,000.
Timaru also have a busy port.
In the late 1830's
whalers used the place.
European settlement begin with
William, George and Robert Rhodes
(The Rhodes brothers) in 1852 and
began building a town quickly
beside government owned
and planned town.
The competing towns gradually merged
and became the city of Timaru and
became a borough in 1868
and a city in 1948.
Building the breakwater and
improved port facilities
helped the town's progress.
