Taupo
is near the northeastern corner
of Lake Taupo, near the Waikato River
and a very popular tourist resort and
commercial centre for the surrounding
dairying, sheep, cattle farming, and the
large exotic forests industries.
Taupo and Lake Taupo is well known for
boating and rainbow trout
(Introduced in 1884) fishing.
Before European settlement in 1869,
by the Armed Constabulary to stop
the Maori leader Te Kooti, the area
was a heavily populated by the Maori
people and it was sparsely settled
by Europeans until W.W.II.
Taupo Bay became a borough in 1953.
Today the area have a
population of about 25,000.
