South Island
New Zealand facts & history in brief
New Zealand Map
Queenstown
is a beautiful and well
known tourist resort town
on the shore of Lake Wakatipu
with the population of about
3000 people.
The town is surrounded by the
scenery rich southern region
of the South Island and is
one of the fastest growing
town and region in New Zealand.
William Gilbert Rees was the
first settler at Queenstown
in 1860, soon the nearby
Shotover River gold rush
made Queenstown another
New Zealand boom town and
became a borough in 1866.
After the 'gold rush' the
population declined rapidly
until recently when it
became a popular
tourist centre.
