South Island
New Zealand facts & history in brief
New Zealand Map
Picton
is a major seaport town
near the top end of the South
Island, in the Marlborough
Sounds with a population of
over 4000, with regular ferry
services to Wellington.
The land for the town was
bought in 1848 and Newton,
as it was called was established.
In 1859 the name was changed
to Picton in honour of Sir
Thomas Picton, one of Duke of
Wellington's Generals and
was the capital of the
Marlborough province
until 1865.
In 1876, Picton became a
borough and narrowly missed
being the capital
of New Zealand.
