Paeroa
is a small service town for
the surrounding dairying and sheep
farming district with the population
of about 5000, at the southern
end of the Coromandel Range,
on the edge of the Hauraki
Plains and the Thames Valley.
Paeroa used to be a river port
with regular services between
the town and Auckland,
through Ohinemuri, Waihou
Rivers and the Hauraki Gulf,
during the 1880s and 1890s
gold rush in the Coromandel and
the surrounding district.
In the 1890s gold was found
near Paeroa and it became
a borough in 1915.
The town also well known for a mineral
spring, providing the 'Paeroa' for
the popular soft drink 'Lemon and
Paeroa'.
