Mount Ruapehu
is one of the three mountains
rising from the central North Island
volcanic plateaux, and at 2797 metres
is the highest peak
in the North Island.
Mount Ruapehu is an active volcano,
often sending steam, ash
and mud up in the air.
The Whakapapa (Northern side),
Turoa (Southern side) and the
Tukino (East side), skifields
attract thousands of skiers,
many from overseas, every winter.
