Mitre Peak
is one of New Zealand's well known
and often photographed land marks.
It rises to 1695 metres
out of Milford Sound.
The name comes from its resemblance's'
to a bishop's mitre from some angles
and was named in 1851 by the crew
of the survey ship HMS Acheron.
Although there are other similar peaks
around Milford Sound, Mitre Peak has
appeared on New Zealand stamps a few times.
