South Island
New Zealand facts & history in brief
New Zealand Map
Milford Sound
is on the southwestern corner of
the South Island and is one of the
most beautiful part of New Zealand
and probably the whole world.
The spectacular fjord cuts deeply
into the coastline.
Sheer rock faces soaring between
1200-1500 metres from the sea,
350 metres deep and 15 kilometres long.
There is access to Milford by road,
by Eglinton Valley and through the
Homer Tunnel, or by air or by the 55
kilometres long Milford Track,
through untouched scenery, enjoyed
by many local and overseas visitors.
The first European Donald Sutherland,
John Malcolm and John Mackay, built
permanent huts in the late 1870s,
now there are hotels with
first-class accommodation and a variety
cruises in the fjord and other
interesting activities.
