New Zealand facts & history in brief

Mataura
is a township in Southland,
between Gore and Invercargill on
the South Island Main Trunk
railway and the main highway.
Mataura was first settled by
Europeans in the late 1850s,
and became a borough in 1895.
A few kilometres from Mataura
was the Maori village, Tuturau,
where in 1836 the battle between
North and South Island Maori
was fought and occupied but
later retaken by the southerners.
In 1937 the site of the village
was given to the Mataura as the
Tuturau Centenary Reserve by
the Maori people of Southland.
The township's main employer is the
local board and paper mill.
