Manawatu Gorge
The Manawatu River, originating
in the Ruahine Range and
flows through the Manawatu Gorge
for 160 km and across the plain
to Foxton Beach where it
enters the Tasman Sea.
The Manawatu Gorge is the major
thoroughfare from the west into
Hawke's Bay through the Tararua
and Ruahine ranges.
The first track was made in
the late 1860s through the gorge,
and ten years later a road was built.
The railway line, on the northern bank
of the steep gorge, was built in the
beginning of the 1890s.
