Hokitika
is a Westland town with a
population of about 5,000 people
near the mouth of the Hokitika River.
The town was the capital of the
province during the goldrush and have
a better harbour than Greymouth, that
later replaced i'ts capital status.
Thomas Brunner and Charles Heaphy
were the first Europeans
to explore the district.
Hokitika became a borough in 1868
and adopted the present name,
before that it was known as
Okitiki and Otatika.
The region has a high rainfall
and a mild temperatures.
