Hanmer Springs
is a health and tourist
resort in North Canterbury.
Surrounded by high mountains and
372 m above sea level, with a dry,
healthy and dust-free atmosphere.
The South Island's largest thermal
water springs have been used for
therapeutic bathing since the early 1860s.
The Queen Mary Hospital specialises
in the treatment of functional nervous
disorders and also the detoxification
centre for alcoholics and drug addicts.
Named after Thomas Hanmer, a pioneer
settler on the nearby St Leonards Station.
The Hanmer Forest Park has many exotic,
'experimental' species including sycamore,
birch,larch, poplar, pines and firs,
and it is a popular recreation area.
