North Island
New Zealand facts & history in brief
New Zealand Map
Eketahuna
is a small town of about 6000
people in north Wairarapa.
Originally settled by Scandinavian
people in the 1870's and was
known as Mellemskov.
Later it became a borough and renamed Eketahuna,
(A Maori name meaning 'to run
aground on a sand bank', although
I have trouble visualising that as
there isn't much of a water around there).
In New Zealand it is also a kind of joke,
referring to non existent
or far away places.
