North Island
New Zealand facts & history in brief

Desert Road
is the main road link between
the north and south parts of
the North Island, (State Highway 1)
over the volcanic
plateau in the shadow of the three giant
volcanos of Mounts Ruhapeu,
Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.
Due to the desert like
conditions and exposure to
the elements the road is
often dangerous and closed
especially during winter.
