Cromwell
is a small service town for the
surrounding sheep farming and
horticultural industry, in Central Otago,
on the shores of the man-made Lake Dunstan,
near Alexandra and Queenstown.
Cromwell, named after Oliver Cromwell,
was settled around 1862, during the
'gold rush', and was called The Junction
before it was renamed and became
a borough in 1866.
In 1985 a new town centre was built ready
for the old centre being flooded by
the Clyde Dam, a hydro-electric project,
that formed Lake Dunstan.
