Ashburton
is in mid Canterbury and is a important
service centre for the surrounding farming area
on the main South Island state highway.
The township was first settled in the 1860's
and was known as Turton after the first
European settlers, Mr and Mrs William Turton,
but later renamed after the Baron Ashburton.
Population around 16.000.
