New Zealand facts & history in brief               New Zealand Map

Arthur's Pass

is one of the main crossing over the Southern Alps, named after Arthur Dudley Dobson, who, with his brothers were the first Europeans to cross it in 1864 after the Maori chief, Tarapuhi told him about the existence of the pass.
A highway was built through the pass during the gold rush on the West Coast.
It is still an important crossing between the east and west coasts.
