Western Australia
Australia facts & history in brief
Fremantle is a few
kilometres from Perth
and is the port of Perth and the main
port for Western Australia.
In 1983, Australia II, an 'America's Cup'
designed boat, owned by the
multimillionaire Western Australian
entrepreneur Alan Bond, won the
America's Cup yacht race.
Fremantle was the site of the 1987 'Cup' race,
which attracted yachting enthusiasts
and television crews from
all over the world.
The 'Fremantle Doctor',
brings the cool sea breeze,
to the hot and humid Perth region.
I visited Fremantle because it was there,
also because New Zealand was involved in the
America's Cup races in
San Diego and Fremantle as well.
Our participation was the talking point of our
nation for the following years,
until we won the 'Cup' and
defended it until 2003.
Most of Fremantle was rebuilt, restored
or repainted for the races.
Nice place.
