Hungary
Márianosztra is about 60 km northeast
of Budapest, amongst the Börzsöny Mountains
and is a popular place of pilgrimage about 8 km from
Szob, with hourly buses service and a popular tourist
place.
On a rise from the village is the Parish Church of Our
Lady and former Monastery that was established in 1355
by King Lajos I. for the Paulist Order- the only Hungarian
Male Order. A nearby statue was erected for his memory.
The Baroque church beside the Monastery, (now a men's
prison) dates from 1360, and retains some original parts.
Márianosztra is renowned as a place of pilgrimage.
The pilgrimages are held in the Parish Church of Our
Lady, attended by thousands, on the second Sunday in
May, first weekend in July, on the Sundays preceding
August 15 and September 14 and
the first Sunday in December.
Inside the church is a copy of the Black Madonna of
Czestochowa, the original was taken to Poland in 1382
by Hungarian monks sent to found the monastery there.
The first written records in 1262, refers to it as Nostra,
like today's Slovak name.
The Hungarian Paulist Order,
built many Monasteries and schools in Hungary. King
Lajos I.'s daughter, Hedvig was
brought up in the Monastery
at Márianosztra.
After the Order was dissolved, the Monastery had many
different functions, since 1958 it served as a women,
at present it is a men's prison.
My greatly admired and revered,
His Excellency József Cardinal Mindszenty of
Hungary was imprisoned here for sometime under the
communist regime. It must have been very funny for the
Communists to imprison His Excellency, the Cardinal
in a former Monastery right beside a Pilgrimage Church.
On the other side of the village, on another hillock
is a small Chapel of Calvary over looking a valley of
open place, for the large number of pilgrims.
Márianosztra can be reached by car, or since
2002 by railway running on the Nagybörzsöny
- Nagyirtáspuszta - Márianosztra route.
Bald Hill, about an hour's walk north of the village
have some of the best views of the region.

Hui Chin and I had to visit Márianosztra for
a number of reasons, of which number one is, that we
have never been here before, the second reason was because
it is a pilgrimage place and being a couple of devote
Catholics, we usually visit places of pilgrimage, the
third reason and at least for me the main and most important
reason was, because my greatly admired and revered,
His Excellency József
Cardinal Mindszenty of Hungary was imprisoned here
for sometime by the communist regime.
