Hungary, facts and history in brief Budapest, facts and history in brief HerendHungaryHerend is a world famous little village for its fine porcelain and majolika near Veszprém and Lake Balaton. Herend is mentioned in documents from 1373. The famous Kinizsi family owned it before the another famous, the Zichy family owned it. The village population died out during the Turkish invasion. Towards the end of the 1700's Herend was repopulated with Hungarian and German families. In 1826 Stingl Vince bought the Miklós castle to open his now world famous higy artistry and exceptionally high quality porcelain and majolika factory. Herend village and villagers progress always was closely tied to the factory's progress. Nearby is the ruins of Essegvár fortress, destroyed by the Turkish invaders.
