Budapest, facts and history in brief
Hungary
Csongrád is a beautiful town in Csongrád county, Hungary.
The settlement is about 135 km southeast from Budapest
by road. On the Motorway E5 to Kiskunfélegyháza
(112 km) and from there on the 451 road (Kiskunfélegyháza
- Orosháza) 24 km to Csongrád.
The township has been settled since early Stone
Age due to its central situation.
It is now and in the past was a popular
place crossing the Tisza river.
Modern history goes back to the Hungarian 'reigning
prince' Árpád - according to legend -
in 896 gifted it to Ond's tribe. (One of the conquering
Hungarian Tribes.)
Ete, one of Ond's son built a mud fortress, which the
local Slav population called Csernigrád, (Black
Fortress) the most probable source of today's name of
Csongrád.
In the 11th Century Szent István, (St. Stephen)
the first king of Hungary made Csongrád the capital
of county by the same name.
By the 12th Century it was a sizeable township.
The Tartars sacked the town like the rest of the country
and in 1241 Béla the fourth made Szeged the counties
capital.
In the early 15 Century under King Zsigmond Csongrád
was made township again.
During the Turkish occupation it became an
important crossing point
over the Tisza River.
The Turks rebuilt and refortified the
fortress.
During the later years the earthen fortress fell into
disuse, and disappeared without trace, thought to be
replaced with today's city centre. Although there are
many written references to the earthen fortress archaeologist
never managed to find any trace of it.
After the Austrian Habsburg's with the aid
of the Russians managed to defeat the 1848
Hungarian Uprising, the Austrians burnt the
town down in revenge for their participation in
the Uprising.
The town was rebuilt and became
very prosperous in the following years as many
of the town's folk work on building the flood
banks on the Tisza river.
Csongrád also well known for its red wines grown
on the nearby sandy hillocks and the health beneficiary
thermal spas.
Endre, my younger brother, Hui Chin and I paid a
quick visit to Csongrád, while Endre took us
around in his car in the nearby townships.
We found the town very friendly and very pretty.
