Turkey
Turkey facts and history in brief.
Gallipoli or Gelibolu in Turkish,
will be long remembered by New Zealanders,
Australians (A.N.Z.A.C.), British
and by Turkish alike.
During the WWI the British tried to
capture the Dardanelles Strait
to help their Russian ally with the
help of the Australian and New Zealand
forces.
The Turkish, under the command of a
little known lieutenant colonel,
Mustafa Kemal defeated the British
with heavy losses to the British,
Australian and New Zealand forces.
Mustafa Kemal, Ataturk, father of the
Turks, became a hero and became the first
president and the founder of modern Turkey.
