JungfraujochSwitzerland, Central Europe The Jungfraujoch is the mountain transition between Moench and Jungfrau in the Bernese Alps, on the border between the cantons of Berne and Valais. Strictly, the Jungfraujoch is at the deepest point on the mountain burr between Moench and Jungfrau, at 3,471 m. It is just above this location that the mountain station of Jungfraubahn is located, which at an altitude of 3,454m is the highest railway station in Europe. The Jungfraujoch is often called the Top of Europe. A little east of the Jochs rises a salient crest,
the Sphinx at an altitude of 3,571m. It begins from
Jungfraujoch on the Valais side and at the Great Aletsch
Glacier. There is an elevator to the summit of the sphinx,
where a viewing platform and a scientific observatory
are located. This information was updated & correct in December 2004. E. & O.E. All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License (see Copyrights for details).
