Rome (Roma) is the capital city of Italy. It is located on the Tiber river, in the central part of the country near the Tyrrhenian Sea, at 41°50'N, 12°15'E. The Vatican City, located in an enclave within Rome, is the seat of the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Rome was the seat of the Roman Kingdom, Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire. By tradition, Rome was founded on April 21, 753 BC, by Romulus, who killed in the process his twin brother named Remus. Rome was built on the Sun hill, which was later named Palatine, and extended to include the seven hills: Palatine, Aventine, Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline and Caelian, after the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The Roman civilisation developed the Latin language, its official language and one of the fundamental elements in linguistics, and the source of the Romance languages. It is to this day the official language of the Catholic Church and the Vatican. Some of the most famous views of Rome in the 18th century were etched by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. His grand vision of classic Rome inspired many to visit the city and examine the ruins themselves. Sarolta, my daughter and I had travelled around Italy quite extensively during 1978, had a good look around many of it's cities, architectural, monumental, artistic and natural treasures. We spent a few enjoyable days in Rome.
On our way home from Hungary in 1996, we had some time to spend in Rome. We visited the Vatican, most of Rome and the sorrounding area.
One day, on our way to the Vatican, the H.Q. of our Catholic faith, we went through a market, set up under some marquees just outside the Vatican, we seen a little hammer-toll combination. It was a cute looking thing and something new for us. We bought it for our son (20) back in New Zealand. We didn't know at that time, that there was an airport kind of security screening to get inside the vatican. We were screened, not even thinking about the little hammer at the time, and of course we were turned away. I have been thinking about this many times since and recalling our experiences throughout our trip in South and North America and the hassle at the airports in 2002 and of course the recent tightening of security at airports world wide, how paranoid a few terrorist managed to make over six billion people. Yeah! Think about that. Wait, soon your wife/husband will screen you before you enter your own house. You think this is silly? Yo!
