France
France facts and history in brief
Versailles is a huge monument to
some of France's extravagant royalties.
The city, the Palace and the gardens
are amongst France's most visited
tourist attractions.
The Palaces and gardens are huge by any standards.
History was made here too, it was the country's
political centre and royal court for
over a hundred years (1682-1789).
In 1971, the victorious Prussians declared
the German Empire from the
Palace's "Hall of Mirrors".
In 1919 the Treaty of Versailles was
signed in the same room.
The First World War dubbed the
"Great War" to 'end all wars'.
Yet that Treaty of Versailles was
one of the underlying factors for WWII.
It left many countries divided and unhappy.
The treaty after the WWII was also signed here.
Hui Chin and I visited Versailles in 2004
and gain during 2006.
I had to go and visit the place with Hui Chin,
Hungary was a major victim of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles.
(The Treaty of Trianon, the son of the Treaty of
Versailles, that affected Hungary really).
