France
France facts and history in brief
There's ain't anything much I can find out about
Pontorson either in books or on the Internet.
It's much like the place doesn't exist.
Well! Hui Chin and I can testify that Pontorson
does exist and a reasonably nice place with reasonably
nice people in it.
We stayed here for about two days and we visited
Mont Saint Michelle while we stayed in Pontorson.
Staying in Pontorson was the easy part, the getting here
and away that taken some doing.
We came from Würtzburg to visit Mont Saint Michelle,
relying on excellent German and French train services
we purchased our Eurail Pass and let our adventure unfold.
What we didn't know that the French railways have fast,
frequent service on most of the main lines, but to get
to Pontorson, we had to rush from Gare du Nord in Paris
by Metro and to Gare du Austerlitz in 15 minutes to catch
our train to Caen with a help of a kind young African
man, - the only one could understand English
on the Metro - (Thank you very much my friend, if you
happen to read this, we are very grateful, even if we
didn't have time to express our
gratitude at the time.)
Bye the way, - we had to jump styles, run up and down
stairs and escalators and we stepped on the train and
we were off. (We got there in the nick of time.)
In Rouen we spent over six hours locked up in the waiting room
(The station was locked up between 12 pm and 6 am and only
the generosity of a Security guard that we could stay inside,
while it was bitterly cold and wet outside. We couldn't really
afford to pay for a Hotel for half the night
either. We were really glad that we could stay
inside, even though the seats were made from
stainless steel and were very uncomfortable,
not made for sleeping on purpose.) Thank you
very much Mr Security Guard.
Our next change was at Caen, where after some time
we had a bus to Coutances.
After nearly twelve hours waiting, (We did have
a good look at Coutances and the Cathedral) we
managed to make our way to Pontorson.
While we did enjoy Pontorson, we did have our
trouble getting away too.
This time we were going through Rennes.
Although we made enquiries, we were told we did not need
reservations at Rennes or Pontorson to get to Paris.
Well, we did need reservation and we did get fined.
So, we found Pontorson, there is a Pontorson and it
is rather rememberable or unforgettable for us.
