France facts and history in brief
Marseille is France's second largest city,
and historically its port and the city dates
back 2500 years.
Over the centuries the city has been ransacked and has seen
religious bigotry, plague and social unrest,
republican and royalist terror.
The city's revolutionaries marching to Paris,
in 1792, that is immortalised in
the national anthem.
Marseille is notorious for crime and racial tension,
it is also a vibrant and interesting
place to visit.
Population nearly a million.
Marseille was another city I had visited before,
during 1978 with my daughter, but I felt that Hui Chin
and I should have another look around.
Well, it deserved an another look.
We did find it different, friendly and
interesting.
