Vienna

Austria

Austria facts and history in brief

Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria.

The city lies in northeastern Austria, on the south bank of the Danube River.

Vienna is Austria's leading cultural, economic, and political centre.

The city's name in German (The official language of Austria) is Wien.

Vienna became the capital of Austria, and later of Austria-Hungary, under the Habsburgs (Hapsburgs), a royal family that ruled central Europe from 1273 to 1918.

During the 1700's and 1800's, Vienna won fame as a world centre of education, literature, music, and science.

Austria-Hungary collapsed after World War I ended in 1918, and Vienna lost much of its importance.

After the end of World War II in 1945, Vienna became a centre for international conferences and the location of several international agencies.

Population is around 2 million.

I have a very soft spot for Vienna. In 1956, I had to flee Hungary after the Soviet Forces brutally crushed our Revolution. (I was shot and caught twice, before I was lucky enough to see the bright 'beacons' of light of Lutzmansburg and freedom and a new future and a new exhilaration.

Vienna and the whole of Austria accepted and mollycuddled a very large number of Hungarian Refugees, that were streaming over it's border to find a warm welcome, freedom and a good chance for a new beginning.

I will never forget the friendliness and hospitality of the Austrian and especially the Viennese people.

My greatful thanks to you all.

Austria and Vienna was also an eye opener for me at the time.

Coming from a bleak, repressive Communist country, I was awestruck by the happiness, the brilliance of Vienna and the feeling of abundance and freedom in the air.

I arrived in Vienna just before Christmas and the streets and shops were decorated and glowing with the brilliance and abundance of a free country's spirit of Christmas.

I love you Austria, Vienna. Thank you again and again.

My daughter Sarolta and I visited Vienna in 1978 and Austria and Vienna have not changed any if it did, it did for the better.

A trully friendly, beautiful place.

Hui Chin and I visited Austria and Vienna again in 2000.

Our conducted sightseeing tour bus has shown us most of Vienna's impressive, beautiful buildings on the Ring and other parts of Vienna including the Saint Stephen's Cathedral, with its colourful roof and magnificient inside, the famous Vienna Opera House, the neo-Gothic Rathaus (City Hall), the impressive Parlament building, the Hofburg (Royal Palace), through the St Michael's Gateway, the Swiss Courtyard, Burgkapelle (Home of the Vienna Boy's Choir), the Imperial Treasury and the Schlosses Schönbrunn and Belvedere among the many attractions of Vienna.
The sightseeing buses cover most of the famous places and they stop many places to give you a chance to have a closer look.

Very interesting place, plenty to see, to keep you busy for awhile.

Hui Chin and I thoroughly enjoyed the place.

In 2005, Hui Chin and I came back to Austria and Vienna again.

We both love the place.

In 2006, Hui Chin and I came back again to Austria and Vienna. More than once, too.

We both love the place.

This time Vienna had the added atraction of putting on an Exhibition, commmemorating the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedomfight and the hundreds of thousands that escaped from the brutal suppression and retaliation that was to follow the revolution and found refuge in Austria.

I have a few photos of the exhibition below.
