Austria facts and history in brief
Innsbruck is the capital of the
Austrian province of
Tyrol in the Inn Valley, between the
northern Alps and the Tuxer mountains
at 605 metres above sea level.
A summer and winter resort and industrial
city, on the historic route
between Germany and Italy and
between Vienna and Switzerland.
It was founded in 1180 as a market town
and was the home of many Habsburg
Tyrolese rulers from the 1300's
to the late 1600's.
Innsbruck hosted the 1964 and
1976 Winter Olympic games.
Innsbruck has a magnificent 15th C.
castle and several ancient churches.
Emperor Maximillian has erected a golden
roof in the Old City.
Today's Innsbruck is a busy rail
and marketing centre.
Innsbruck has many attractions,
a university, technical schools,
several museums and a botanical garden
specialising in Alpine plants.
Innsbruck's industries include metal
products, leather, stained glass,
textiles, and processed
food and printing.
Population of about 120,000.
Hui Chin and I enjoyed our stay in
Innsbruck.
Spent some time sightseeing
the city by conducted buses.
We've visited the famous Golden
Roof, the City Tower in the Old
City centre and the
Triumphal Arch nearby.
The Imperial Palace dating from 1397
with its Giants' Hall and the Imperial
Church nearby with its Habsburg
sarcophagus and statues were
other interesting sights.
The Schloss Ambras on one of the
nearby hills was also interesting,
so were the Swarovsky Kritallwelten
(A series of caverns holding the
famous Swarovsky crystals.
After exploring the the city and its
surroundings, we went to see and
snowboard at the fabulous Stubal
Glacier (Open all year around), by
the white Stubaltalbahn bus.
The giant Olympic ski-jump
is another beautiful sight.
Hui Chin and I were very impressed
with the magnificent mountains closely
surrounding the town. Corker.
After exploring Innsbruck we returned
for a few days to Vienna before
we took another Intercity train to
Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia.
During our trip in 2005, we returned to Innsbruck again
for short while, still a very nice and pleasant place.
