Austria
My Austria series Austria is a very beautiful alpine country, very rich in history, tradition, natural and human resources. Many of the world's greatest musicians came from Austria. Area is 83,857 km2 or 32,377 square miles. Currency is the Schilling = 100 Groschen. Official language is German. Population is nearly 10 million. Capital is Vienna.
After the brutal suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution I managed to escape to Austria. Austria really opened its borders, doors and the Austrian people's heart to me and my fellow fleeing Hungarians. I spent some time in Oberpullendorf, Eisenstadt, Vienna and Hörsching in late December 1956 and early January 1957 and I loved the beautiful, hospitable, and generous people and also the beautiful country.
I visited Austria, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz, Vienna and many other places with my daughter in 1978. We have really enjoyed ourselves very much. In 2000, Hui Chin and I toured Austria and spent some time sightseeing by conducted buses in Vienna after our arrival. Later we took an Intercity express to Salzburg, where we spent another few days sightseeing and generally just 'lurking' around. We visited the famous sets and backgrounds for the film "Sound of Music", and an old unused salt mine, now a tourist attraction. Next day we went over to Germany to see Hitler's old place at Berchtesgaden, or the 'Eagles Nest', or Obersalzburg. Also visited the old Salzburg Fortress. Than we went on a cable car to the top of one of the many mountains around to play in a snow storm. (Hui Chin is from Singapore) Innsbruck was our next destination. Very beautiful with the Alps practically encircling the town. From here we nipped over to Germany again to the famous town of Oberammergau. Hui Chin and I were rather disappointed with Oberammergau. We read the story, behind the festivities, but to us it only appeared to be a money making enterprise. After exploring Innsbruck we returned for a few days to Vienna before we took another Intercity train to Bratislava the Capital of Slovakia.
In 2003 Hui Chin returned for another short visit to Linz, Vienna and Wiener Neustadt.
During 2005, Hui Chin and I visited a few places in Austria again.
